group health insurance

Group health insurance is an employer based insurance program that is usually offered in some sort of benefits package. Most state/local agencies offer benefit packages containing some form of group health insurance coverage. Generally speaking, group health insurance is better than individual health insurance because your premiums will be lower and your options greater. Because group health insurance is specifically designated for employer-employee relationships, if your employer does not offer a benefits program, your only option is to purchase and individual health insurance policy.

Group health insurance can be broken down into 2 main categories, those of:

  • Fully insured: Employer takes all responsibility/risk for paying your claims.
  • Minimum Premium Plan (MPP): Employer responsible up to a specified maximum cost. Beyond this maximum, the insurer takes on the responsibility.

The majority of group health insurance plans don't cover a hospital related expenses.
